Putin, Tokayev and Mirziyoyev launch Russian gas supplies to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan

Russia's Gazprom on Saturday began supplying gas to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan.

The launching ceremony was attended by the leaders of the three states – Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the heads of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Source. This was reported by Reuters.

Gazprom, which has lost the European export market, is trying to reorient supplies to Asia. At the end of 2022, Russia initiated discussions with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on a gas union for domestic supplies and supplies to third-country markets, including China.

In June, Russia and Uzbekistan agreed to supply 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year for two years through the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline via Kazakhstan.

"We are open to further cooperation, we will try to meet the needs of all our Kazakh and Uzbek friends, partners, and other interested consumers in this type of fuel," Putin said on Saturday.

Tokayev said that Kazakhstan is interested in the full use of its transit potential and is ready to further increase the transportation of Russian gas.

Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said in August that Kazakhstan is discussing the possibility of transiting 1.5 to 10.0 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Uzbekistan per year.

In 2022, Gazprom's exports to non-CIS countries, including China and Turkey, fell by almost 46% to 100.9 bcm, mainly due to a reduction in supplies to the EU.

Following the drop in exports, Gazprom's production in 2022 decreased by 20% to 412.6 billion cubic meters. Gazprom stopped disclosing gas production and export statistics.

Background. As a reminder, Moldova will no longer buy gas from Gazprom, as the country has managed to obtain gas from alternative sources in Europe.
