Reports from Gaza of an air strike on a hospital and a large number of casualties
Hamas claims the explosion was the result of an Israeli airstrike, IDF says the hospital was not targeted

Reports from the Gaza Strip indicate that an Israeli airstrike hit the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital.
A Gaza health official said that the number of casualties is estimated at at least 200 people, but this information will be updated as many people are trapped in the rubble.
Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital is located in the central part of the Gaza Strip.
An Israeli army spokesperson said that reports of a possible Israeli air strike are being investigated, but there is no information yet.
According to local residents, hundreds of IDPs were hiding in the hospital.
Representatives of the Gaza Civil Defense say that the explosion was the result of an Israeli air strike and hundreds of people remain trapped in the rubble.
The Israeli military says it is investigating the incident.
UPDATED: The strike on Al-Ahly hospital has provoked a strong reaction in the world. In a statement released Tuesday evening, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the international community must urgently intervene to stop such violations.
Following Egypt, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the airstrike "appalling and completely unacceptable."
Jordan also condemned the air strike, and Turkish President Erdogan called for an end to the "unprecedented brutality in Gaza."
The head of the international charity organization MedGlobal, Zaher Sahloul, called the attack the worst attack on a medical facility in the 21st century, a war crime, and a violation of the principle of neutrality of medical facilities and the Geneva Convention.
Estimates of the death toll are still approximate, as the exact number of people hiding in the hospital was hardly known.
Earlier, figures of 200 and 500 deaths were reported. Gaza Civil Defense officials said at least 300 people were killed, but hundreds remain trapped in the rubble.
UPDATED: According to the BBC, an Israeli army spokesman said by phone that the hospital "was not a target of the IDF".
