A large-scale failure occurred in the operation of the Russian Internet domain .ru

On Tuesday, January 30, the Internet in Russia suffered a large-scale failure. Users complain, in particular, of problems with access to the websites of major banks and trading platforms, according to Russian media.

According to Kommersant, the Downradar service records complaints about the work of MTS and Megafon operators.

The technical problem in the .ru domain zone is related to the global DNSSEC infrastructure, the Russian Ministry of Digital Transformation said. Access to Runet sites will be restored in the near future, the ministry assured.

Currently, Yandex sites, a number of news portals, banking, taxi and delivery apps are down. Customers of major Russian operators, as well as compatriots abroad, such as in Europe and Armenia, have complained of access problems.

The specialized communities say that the failure may be related to DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions), a protocol used to improve website security. For example, to counteract the replacement of data or IP addresses by attackers.

Lawyers from the Network Freedoms human rights project suggest that the malfunctioning of the .ru domain zone sites could have been caused by "experiments with the creation of a national domain name service."

"The Russian authorities have long warned that they will try to transfer all users of the country to the national DNS server. Probably, this is exactly what is happening now with a lot of websites in the .ru zone," the channel said.
