Historic stock exchange building on fire in Copenhagen
The 19th-century building contains cultural and historical treasures, and the fire came as a shock to the Danes

The historic Old Stock Exchange building, one of Denmark's most famous landmarks, has caught fire in Copenhagen. As a result, the building's spire collapsed. This incident is already being compared to the fire in Notre Dame Cathedral that occurred in 2019.
There is no information about the cause of the fire, nor about the victims. It is known that at the time of the fire, the building was undergoing reconstruction.

Emergency services and employees of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, whose headquarters have been located in the building since 1974, are currently on site.
Its chairman, Brian Mikkelsen, told reporters that what happened came as a shock to him:
"Everyone at the Danish Chamber of Commerce is in tears. This was not only our place of work, but also our history," Mikkelsen said.
In addition, the National Museum of Denmark sent 25 of its employees to help save the paintings in the building and other cultural property. In particular, they managed to save the paintings of the famous 19th century Danish impressionist Peder Severin Kroer.
First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska expressed her condolences to the Danes.
"While in Copenhagen, I learned about the fire that severely damaged one of the city's most iconic buildings, the Borsen. I express my condolences and support to the people of Denmark in the hope that this terrible loss will be overcome, as it has been many times in the past," she tweeted.

The building was constructed in the 17th century and was originally intended for the trade of tea and spices.
In 1857, it came under the ownership of the Danish Chamber of Commerce and was partially rebuilt. The building is crowned with a 56-metre spire in the shape of intertwined dragon tails. According to legend, the dragons were supposed to protect the gold and other valuables inside the exchange.
