Polish Prime Minister supports Kaja Kallas' candidacy for EU foreign policy chief
Kallas is known as one of the most loyal supporters of Ukraine among European leaders
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has endorsed the candidacy of Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas for the post of the EU's new foreign policy chief.
He said this before an informal dinner of European Union leaders on Monday evening, where they will discuss the appointment of new leaders of the bloc, the BBC reports.
Kallas is known as one of the most loyal supporters of Ukraine among European leaders. Under her leadership, Estonia has allocated military aid to Kyiv in the amount of about 1.6% of the country's GDP, which ranks first in the world.
According to media reports, her appointment as the new EU foreign policy chief is the most likely scenario.
In addition, according to journalists, Ursula von der Leyen should remain the head of the European Commission, and former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa will become the new head of the European Council.
"Kaja Kallas is a very good candidate, she is very familiar with the problems of our region and understands the Ukrainian and Russian realities," Tusk said, as quoted by Polish TVP World.
He added that Kallas' position is "identical to the Polish one".
All three candidates are scheduled to be officially approved at the EU summit in late June, after which the European Parliament will be able to vote on von der Leyen and the composition of the European Commission in July.
If the summit also approves Callas' candidacy as Josep Borrell's successor, she will become the second Eastern European to hold one of the three top EU posts after Donald Tusk.
Tusk served as President of the European Council in 2014-19.
In addition to Kallas, former prime ministers of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel and Belgium Alexander de Kroo are considered candidates for the post of the EU's top diplomat.
