Support for Ukraine to be announced at NATO summit
US President Joe Biden has announced new measures to strengthen Ukraine's air defence following Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and other cities that killed 36 people.
"Russia's missile strikes, which have killed dozens of Ukrainian civilians and damaged and destroyed Kyiv's largest children's hospital, are a horrific reminder of Russia's brutality. It is critical that the world continue to stand with Ukraine," the statement posted on the White House website reads.
"This week, I will welcome President Zelenskyy and NATO leaders to Washington, and I will meet with President Zelenskyy to make clear that our support for Ukraine is unwavering," the White House chief said.
Biden said that he would announce new measures to strengthen Ukraine's air defence during his meeting with Zelenskyy.
"Together with our allies, we will announce new measures to strengthen Ukraine's air defences to help protect their cities and civilians from Russian attacks. The United States stands with the people of Ukraine," the statement said.
The death toll from a massive missile strike on Ukrainian civilians has risen to 37, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Among the dead are three children. Another 170 people, including 13 children, were injured.
Background. On Monday 8 July, the Russian military launched about 40 missiles of various types at Ukraine. Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsk, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk were attacked. This attack was the bloodiest in 2024 in terms of casualties.
In Kyiv, the Okhmadyt children's hospital was hit. The intensive care unit, operating theatre and oncology department were damaged. Children, their parents and medical staff were trapped in the rubble.
According to the SBU, Russia used an X-101 strategic cruise missile to attack the children's hospital.
