Amid Russian attack, NATO summit communiqué to be amended: Ukraine's accession will be called "irreversible"
Earlier, the US and Germany were promoting just the word "bridge" to Ukraine's NATO membership

The preliminary draft text of the joint communiqué of NATO members following the Washington summit will call Ukraine's path to joining the alliance "irreversible".
Source. This was reported by CNN with reference to three informed sources.
Earlier, the word "bridge" was reportedly used to refer to Ukraine's membership in NATO, a wording promoted by Germany and the United States.
The question of how firmly Ukraine should be assured of NATO membership has become a key topic of discussion among the alliance's 32 members ahead of the summit that opens today.
The draft document may still change, but the presence of such wording would send an important signal to Kyiv and Moscow, CNN writes.
However, officials also stressed the importance of "tangible measures," in the words of a European diplomat, to support Ukraine's fight against Russia.
Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, said at an event on Monday that it was not just about linguistic language, but about really bringing Ukraine closer to NATO.
One of the TV station's sources, a US official, said that the White House supports the use of the word "irreversible" in the final communiqué, provided that the document also confirms that Kyiv's work on democratic reforms will continue.
The NATO summit will be held in Washington on 9-10 July.
Background. US President Joe Biden has announced new measures to strengthen Ukraine's air defence following Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities that killed 37 people. These measures will be announced at the summit.
