In an interview with Japanese TV, Zelenskyy refuses to cease fire until Russians withdraw from Ukraine

For the first time in more than two years, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an exclusive interview to NHK.

He spoke about the prospects for ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine, his relationship with former US President Donald Trump, and his hopes for further support from Japan.

In the interview, which took place in Kyiv on Friday, Zelenskyy outlined a path to ending the ongoing fighting.

Zelensky said patience, support and diplomatic pressure are the three factors for a just end to the war. He added that if the US and European countries remain united, it will increase pressure and demonstrate to Moscow that it has no chance.

Zelenskyy again rejected demands for a ceasefire in the face of Russian aggression until Russian forces leave the occupied territories of Ukraine. He reiterated Kyiv's previous line on the terms of the cessation of hostilities.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Kyiv has repeatedly stressed that peace talks with Russia are possible only after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders.

In addition, Zelenskyy announced plans to start detailed discussions with other countries on Ukraine's territorial integrity and other topics.

An action plan for peace is expected to be prepared by the end of November.

The Ukrainian president also said that the authorities in Kyiv had established contacts with the campaign headquarters of US presidential candidate Donald Trump and his likely rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. During the phone conversation, he invited Trump to visit Ukraine, Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of Japan's support.

Zelenskyy said that Japan is a member of the Group of Seven and has provided economic, humanitarian and technical support to Ukraine. He also noted that Japan was quick to lend a helping hand, becoming the first non-NATO country to sign a security cooperation agreement with Ukraine.

Background. As it became known the day before, the United States and Japan will increase the production of Patriot missiles. The decision was made due to the growing need of other countries for American air defence systems.
