Kamala Harris has become the Democratic presidential candidate
She has collected all the necessary votes for the nomination and will officially accept the nomination next week
Vice President Kamala Harris has become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee after receiving the support of a majority of delegates at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, she announced on 2 August.
Kamala now has a chance to become the first female US president in history.
"I am honoured to be the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States," she wrote in a post on social media, adding, "I will officially accept the nomination next week.

"This campaign is about people coming together in love for our country to fight for who we are," she wrote.
In January 2021, she became the first female vice president in US history.
Harris's work as vice president focused on immigration and women's rights, but she has played a role in the Biden administration in foreign affairs as well.
At the Global Peace Summit for Ukraine in Switzerland this June, Harris represented the US and announced more than $1.5 billion in additional support for Ukraine. The summit also marked her sixth meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Former US ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst said that Harris as president would likely maintain the same policy towards Ukraine as the Biden administration.
Ukrainian officials, including Zelenskyy, have stressed that Kyiv will continue to cooperate productively with any US administration, regardless of the outcome of the November elections.
