Details. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 23 km east of Nurdagi, near the border with Syria.
Turkish representative Hulusi Shahin said that, according to preliminary data, 130 buildings were destroyed in the city of Malatya. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasised that the authorities have coordinated search and rescue operations to find the victims.
UPDATED at 12:50 p.m.:
According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 912 people were killed in the earthquake. Almost 5,385 more were injured.
In addition, 2,470 people were rescued from under the rubble, and a total of 2,818 buildings were destroyed.
According to Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, at least 284 people were killed and more than 2,300 injured. In neighbouring Syria, there are at least 237 dead and more than 630 injured.
