A bomb was detonated on the route of the motorcade of Bulgarian Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov told Bulgarian TV that the victims were avoided due to a lucky coincidence.

Source. This was reported by Euractiv.

According to Sarafov, the explosive device was planted on the highway between Sofia and the town of Samokov, it contained about 3 kg of TNT and high explosive elements. A crater 3 meters in diameter and 40 cm deep was formed at the site of the explosion.

Geshev was traveling toward Sofia to go to Turkey. According to Safarov, the explosive device was planted to kill Geshev, not just to intimidate him.

The attempted murder of the chief prosecutor was regarded as a terrorist act. The case is being investigated by the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, assisted by the police. The section of the highway in the area of the explosion is closed until the investigation is completed.

Before the trip, Geshev demanded that the Bulgarian government report on how the country is implementing EU sanctions against Russia.

"The prosecutor's office is requesting information from the Council of Ministers and all ministries and agencies involved in the work of the coordination group on Russian sanctions on what specific measures and actions have been taken, what resolutions have been issued in connection with the sanctions imposed," Euractiv quoted the prosecutor's office as saying.

As the news agency reported back in February, the Bulgarian authorities did not impose any restrictive measures on Russian citizens and companies on the EU sanctions list.

At the same time, almost 1400 Russians and more than 170 companies, as well as their relatives and legal entities, are already on the EU list. In April 2022, journalists of the investigative project Bird.bg pointed to the defendants on the EU blacklists who own Bulgarian real estate.

Background. As reported, Bulgaria fined Russia's Lukoil €100 million for abuse of dominance.
