Ukrzaliznytsia will enhance security measures in passenger trains. In particular, following public discussion and a petition, the company announced the creation of special compartments for women.

This information was reported by the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia.

Thus, IT solutions are being developed, and the necessary changes will be made to regulatory acts. The company is also consulting with lawyers, international and Ukrainian public organisations.

These compartments will be organised on long-distance routes. Tickets for the initial stage will only be available through the Ukrainian Railways application.

"Our railway workers have carefully studied the global experience because women's compartments or cars exist in some Asian countries and have been tested in Europe. We believe in a comprehensive approach where alarm buttons and signalling in the compartments, video surveillance, increased patrols, and inevitable punishment for any proven act of harassment will play a key role in eradicating this phenomenon. Therefore, the current decision of the railway is to help women feel more comfortable and safer through a set of measures, one of which will be the pilot women compartments project," said Yevhen Liashchenko, Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.

Women, transgender women, and mothers with children under six years of age of any gender will be allowed in these women's compartments. But "this dialogue is still open."

Background. All new and modernised carriages of Ukrzaliznytsia – which is about 15% of carriages in active use – are currently equipped with video surveillance cameras and conductor call buttons.
