Poland to set up commission to check politicians for ties to Russia
According to President Duda, such a commission should operate throughout the European Union

On Monday, May 29, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a law establishing a commission that will study Russia's influence on security in the country over the past 15 years. The commission is supposed to investigate "the activities of government officials and senior executives in the period from 2007 to 2022 who may have been under Russian influence and acted to the detriment of the country."
Source. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
The commission will consist of nine people who will be appointed and dismissed by the Polish parliament, the Sejm. It will have the powers of the prosecutor's office and the court. The commission will be able to impose punishment on officials, including removing them from political office for 10 years.
The Polish opposition believes that the purpose of this law is to remove Duda's opponent, former Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Critics also point out that the new law violates the country's constitution and deprives people of the right to an independent court.
Andrzej Duda, in turn, is convinced that "it is necessary to study Russian influence not only in Poland but throughout the European Union." He asked Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to raise this issue in the European Council.
According to the Polish president, such a commission at the European level should consider "the issue of Russian influence, Russian lobbying, Russian money" that could take place in various European institutions.
Duda believes that Russian influence in the EU could have been present when the decision to build the Nord Stream gas pipeline was made.
Background. As a reminder, Poland will demand that the EU create a fund to support Ukraine's neighbors.
