Finland has started blocking real estate sales to Russians

It is no longer possible for Russians to purchase real estate in Finland. Local authorities have started blocking transactions for national security reasons.

Back in 2020, Finland restricted the purchase of real estate for citizens of any non-EU country. To make a deal, foreigners must obtain a special license from the Ministry of Defense.

Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the Finnish government has tightened control since 2023. Legislative amendments have given the authorities broader powers to cancel real estate transactions when necessary to ensure national security.

With this in mind, the government has recently blocked three real estate deals with Russian buyers. As the Defense Ministry explained, the properties were located near the border with Russia in the southeast. Their acquisition "would interfere with the defense of Finland's territorial integrity."

Recently, Finland has been thinking about simplifying the procedure for seizing real estate owned by Russians. The need for this has arisen because due to sanctions and travel restrictions, Russian owners cannot pay their bills and maintain their homes in good condition.

Background. As a reminder, the Netherlands has launched an investigation into Yandex taxi on suspicion of cooperation with the FSB.
