Sweden plans to stop investigation into Nord Stream explosions

Sweden is planning to stop the investigation into the explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipeline, as investigators are likely to have failed to identify the suspects. This was reported by several German media outlets on Tuesday.

According to the newspapers Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit and the broadcasters NDR and WDR, the Swedish prosecutor leading the investigation will officially announce the termination of the investigation in the coming days.

In a comment to Reuters, prosecutor Mats Jungqvist said:

"I will make a decision tomorrow, and what that decision will be, I cannot tell you now. It depends on various factors and I can't say more than that right now."

As the explosions occurred in the Swedish and Danish exclusive economic zones, both countries are conducting investigations along with Germany. The conclusion of the Swedish investigation will not affect the German investigation, according to media reports.

The sabotage of the gas pipeline carrying gas from Russia to Europe took place on 1 October 2022 amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, on the eve of the start of the heating season in Europe and ahead of the opening of an alternative underwater gas pipeline to Poland from Norway in the same sector of the Baltic Sea.

In early March last year, several Western newspapers reported that a "pro-Ukrainian group" may have been involved in the pipeline explosion.

According to the media, NATO wanted this information to remain secret, as it would have aggravated relations between Ukraine and Germany.

The publications indicated that the Zelenskyy administration was unaware of the impending sabotage. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied the allegations, saying that "Ukrainians definitely did not do it".
