Ukraine invites IAEA specialists to the country to assess the situation at Ukrainian nuclear power plants

What happened. The Head of the Committee on Energy and Public Utilities invites experts from IAEA to estimate the situation at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Also, Ukrainian authorities urged the international community to demand a ceasefire from Russia to get a possibility to repair the power supply network at Chornobyl NPP. The fact is reserve diesel generators are capable to provide Chornobyl NPP with power for 48 hours. After that, the cooling system of the spent fuel storage will be switched off. It can cause the risk of radiation leakage.

Comments. “The situation at Chornobyl NPP is complicated. There were shellings that caused damage of power lines. Thus, Chornobyl NPP does not have electricity. We do not know what to expect from the occupiers. We invite experts from IAEA to Ukraine in order to show them the real picture at Ukrainian NPPs”, – Andriy Herus, The Head of the Committee on Energy and Public Utilities, commented this situation.
Details. As a result of the hostile actions of Russian occupiers, Chornobyl NPP was totally de-energized. Due to constant military actions, repairing of power supply is impossible. Slavutich, a satellite city of Chornobyl NPP is de-energized as well.
“Ukenergo”, Ukrainian energy transmission operatior, expects the safe coridor that will allow to renew power lines supplying energy to Chornobyl NPP.
“Our repair teams are ready to fix the line immediately, despite the threat of execution from the enemy. They are waiting for permission,” the press service of “Ukrenergo” reports.
Andriy Herus outlined that the results of Chornobyl NPP’s shellings will have an impact primarily on Belarus: “Chornobyl NPP is dangerous for Belarus. Belarus people will feel the results of friendship with the Russian people and army.
