Ukraine became the most mined country in the world

The United States will provide Ukraine with $90 million for mine clearance. There is already an agreement with the U.S. Department of State. The Ukrainian side is going to use this money to attract 100 demining groups, as well as to launch a large-scale project to train and equip employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and to build a professional demining centre with the appropriate equipment.

Details. Due to the war with russia, a third of Ukraine is mined – sappers are working on an area of 175,000 square kilometers. It will take at least 7 years to completely clear the territories of explosives, Ms. Akopian said.

“Ukraine is the most mined country in the world. We must recognise this and deal with it. No one in the world has experience in demining such a large territory,” she stated.

On November 9, SES press officer Oleksandr Khorunzhyi pointed out that the most problematic areas in terms of the number of mines were Donbas and Kharkiv Oblast. In addition, shells also have to be neutralised. Thus, since the beginning of the war, sappers managed to find and neutralise 2148 aerial bombs.

In August, the SES released the application “Demining of Ukraine”. With its help, users can inform rescuers about the detected explosive objects.

And the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine has created a website where farmers can leave applications for clearing fields from such devices.

According to the Ministry, Ukraine is actively supported by the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, Croatia, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, France, Iceland, and Denmark in the field of demining.
