Details. It is noted that all nuclear power plants in Ukraine are equipped with devices that detect earthquakes. The Main Centre of Special Control (MCSC) monitors and records any deviations from the seismic stability norms in the area of nuclear power plants in real time.
"All Ukrainian NPPs were designed taking into account the seismic activity of the region. When selecting sites for construction, we chose the safest ones. Domestic nuclear power plants can withstand earthquakes measuring up to seven points," explains NNEGC President Petro Kotin.
In addition, in the event of an earthquake with a magnitude of 6, all NPP units are immediately shut down and switched to safe mode.
Moreover, Energoatom emphasises that Western experts use a scale that takes into account the physical consequences of destruction, not energy, as in the Richter scale. Therefore, the 8-9 points recorded in Turkey are equivalent to 6-7 points on the Richter scale.
