Russia has lost "strategically and operationally" one year after invading Ukraine - General Milley

Nearly a year after Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has "lost strategically, operationally and tactically," Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said from Brussels on Tuesday.

"Putin thought he could quickly defeat Ukraine, break the NATO alliance and act with impunity. He was wrong," the American general said.

"Ukraine remains free, Ukrainians remain independent. NATO and this coalition have never been stronger, and Russia is now a global pariah. And the world is inspired by Ukrainian bravery and resilience. In short, Russia has lost – they have lost strategically, operationally and tactically, and they are paying a huge price on the battlefield," the general emphasized.

Milley and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are in Brussels for the ninth meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine's defense to discuss continued support for Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Milley said that until Putin "ends the war by his own choice," the international community "will continue to support Ukraine with the equipment and capabilities necessary for self-defense."

Background. As Secretary Lloyd Austin noted at the same meeting, the allies will help Ukraine launch a counteroffensive in the spring.
