Five US congressmen call on Biden to send fighter jets to Ukraine

A group of five congressmen from both parties has sent a letter to US President Joe Biden asking his administration to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Details. These efforts will likely not change or influence the administration's decision on what it sends to Ukraine, but it comes just as Biden is on a trip to Poland and on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian invasion.

The letter was signed by Congressmen Jared Golden, a Democrat; Tony Gonzales, a Republican; Jason Crowe, a Democrat; Chrissy Houlihan, a Democrat; and Mike Gallagher, a Republican.

"It is in this spirit of leadership and support that we respectfully request your administration to provide Ukraine with enhanced air superiority capabilities as soon as possible, including the F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft requested by Kyiv or similar fourth-generation aircraft. The provision of such aircraft is necessary to help Ukraine defend its airspace, especially in light of renewed Russian offensive operations and the expected increase in the scale of hostilities," the letter reads.

Background. Last month, when asked whether the United States would supply American-made F-16s, Biden answered with a categorical "no," although he later said that negotiations with Kyiv on the supply of weapons were ongoing.

The day before, it was reported that the European Parliament had called for consideration of supplying Ukraine with fighter jets and adopted a resolution with a corresponding call.
