US Department of Justice confiscates $500 million worth of Russian assets after invasion

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine a year ago, the US Department of Justice has confiscated more than $500 million in yachts, real estate and other assets from people who support the Russian government and have evaded US sanctions.

Details. The U.S. Department of Justice's KleptoCapture Task Force, consisting of federal prosecutors, investigators and analysts, has targeted the property of Russian oligarchs and Kremlin insiders.
As part of this effort, the DOJ announced on Friday a lawsuit for civil forfeiture of $75 million worth of property belonging to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg. An employee of Vekselberg's who helped the oligarch acquire multimillion-dollar properties in Manhattan, the Hamptons and Florida was indicted earlier this month on charges of allegedly violating US sanctions and international money laundering.
Earlier, the DOJ seized Vekselberg's luxury yacht Tango worth $90 million.
In total, the department has confiscated two mega-yachts, four airplanes, and 10 properties from Russian oligarchs and agents.
On Friday, prosecutors unveiled a new indictment accusing a Russian of providing US communications equipment to the FSB in violation of US sanctions. According to the indictment, 47-year-old Moscow resident Ilya Balakayev repeatedly traveled to the United States to purchase spare parts for electronic equipment and bring them back to Russia. Balakayev created a network of people in the United States to help him purchase spare parts that were not available in Russia for equipment used for surveillance and covert communications.
