"This military assistance package includes ammunition for HIMARS and howitzers used by Ukraine, as well as ammunition for Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, pontoon crossings, and maintenance and training," Reuters quoted Blinken as saying.
The new aid package includes:
- Ammunition for artillery missile systems (HIMARS)
- 155-mm artillery shells
- 105-mm artillery shells
- 25-mm ammunition
- Equipment for guidance of pontoon crossings for armored vehicles
- Explosives and equipment for demolition and obstacle removal
- Diagnostic equipment for maintenance and repair of vehicles
- Spare parts and other equipment
Last week, the United States announced $2 billion in assistance under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which contracts with industry for supplies and takes more time to deliver.
The new package brings U.S. aid to Ukraine to more than $32 billion since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Ukrainian officials also pushed for the purchase of American F-16 fighter jets, but this was opposed by President Joe Biden and other Western leaders.
Background. Earlier it was reported that the United States would provide Ukraine with collapsible armored bridges for the military for the first time.
