Acting Minister of Defense of Denmark Troels Lund Poulsen visited a plant in Germany where Leopard 1 tanks are being prepared to be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Danish Ministry of Defense quoted the minister in a press release after his visit to the plant:

"I was there to make sure that the work on preparing Leopard 1 tanks for Ukraine is progressing and that we can send them as soon as possible," Poulsen said, as quoted in the press release by the Ministry of Defense.

"I am proud that with this large and important donation Denmark, in cooperation with other countries, is supporting Ukraine's fight for its freedom. We still hope to be able to deliver the first tanks this spring," he said.

The Danish Ministry of Defense aims to "provide tanks to two battalions as soon as possible, which means supplying about 80 vehicles."

The first of these will be used to train Ukrainian tankers.

Western politicians have been discussing the issue of supplying tanks to Ukraine throughout the past year. At the eighth Ramstein meeting of Ukraine's allies on January 21, defense ministers failed to agree on a common position on supplying Kyiv with tanks.

A few days later, however, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that he had decided to supply Leopard tanks to Ukraine, and a "tank coalition" began to form.

In early February, the Danish government decided to cooperate with Germany and the Netherlands to supply 100 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine.

Background. As reported, the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland announced the transfer of 10 Leopard tanks to Ukraine this week.
