Over 202,000 new individual entrepreneurs have been registered in Ukraine over the past year since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion. Most of the new businesses have been opened in the retail sector.

This is evidenced by Opendatabot data.

After the outbreak of the great war, the registers were down for some time and it was impossible to open a sole proprietorship. After the possibility of starting a business was restored, more than a thousand new businesses were registered through the Diya app on the first day.

By April, the number had increased tenfold to 12,600. Since then, the number of new sole proprietorships has been increasing, peaking at 20,100 in September.

After a slight decline in autumn and early winter, most likely due to blackouts and massive russian attacks on civilian infrastructure, the number of new small and medium businesses started growing again in early 2023.

The largest number of new sole proprietorships since the start of the full-scale invasion was registered in Kyiv – 29,000. In Lviv Oblast, 16,800 sole proprietors appeared, followed by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where 15,900 new businesses were registered.

The war has also changed the activities of small and medium businesses. For instance, before the full-scale invasion, the first place in terms of the number of registrations of new sole proprietorships was occupied by the CEA "Computer programming, consulting and related activities", while the categories "Provision of information services" and "Provision of other individual services" were in third and fourth place.

The year of the full-scale war changed the situation – in 2022, trade-related sole proprietorships broke into the top. New sole proprietorships in programming moved to second place, behind retail businesses. The third place was occupied by businesses in the wholesale trade of motor vehicles. Instead, information and personal services were ranked 5th and 7th in the list, respectively.

Previously. Over the past year, more women have started their own businesses. Thus, in 2023, one in two new sole proprietorships was started by women.
