US supports creation of tribunal to investigate Russian aggression against Ukraine
The best model would be to create an international court based on the Ukrainian judicial system, the diplomat said

US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth van Schaack said that the United States supports the creation of a special tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
Source. This was reported by the Voice of America.
Van Schaack told the participants of the Nuremberg Principles conference that the most effective model for ensuring accountability would be "the creation of an international court based on the judicial system of Ukraine, but including some international elements."
Answering a question from the Voice of America's Ukrainian Service, Van Schaack said that Ukrainian officials are studying both this hybrid model and a stand-alone international institution that would need the support of the UN General Assembly.
However, Van Schaak noted that the General Assembly may not have enough votes to create a new institute, which may require UN funding or support.
Background. As a reminder, a UN commission recognized Russia's deportation of Ukrainian children from the occupied territories as a war crime.
