Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges
Former US President Donald Trump has arrived at a New York court where he will be formally charged with financial fraud.
Upon arrival at the court, Trump surrendered to the authorities and was formally taken into custody. This is a formal detention before charges are filed. He will not be handcuffed, but will be fingerprinted and photographed in profile and full-face for the case. After that, the first hearing in the case will take place, CNN writes.
Then Trump will most likely be released on bail or a receipt, return to the district attorney's office, and then go to his residence.
The US media reported that Trump intends to appear in court himself to declare his innocence. Before arriving at the court, he posted a short statement on his social network Truth Social.
"Heading to Lower Manhattan, to the courthouse. It seems so surreal – this is it, they are going to arrest me. I can't believe this is happening in America," he said.
Trump arrived at the court in a motorcade of a dozen cars and with security guards assigned to him as a former president.
Trump's motorcade arrived at the court from Trump Tower, where the ex-president had arrived from Florida the day before.
Numerous supporters and opponents of Trump, as well as journalists, gathered outside the court; the surrounding area was cordoned off by police and Secret Service officers guarding Trump.
Despite the interest of journalists, the court did not allow live broadcasting from the courtroom, allowing photographers to take only a few pictures before the hearing.
He became the first former US president to face criminal charges. CNN and the NYT previously reported that Trump is suspected of intentionally falsifying financial records in connection with payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
Earlier, a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Trump in a criminal case over a $130,000 hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels, who reimbursed the money from the campaign fund. She received the money from Trump's lawyers before the 2016 election.
Trump himself denies any connection to Daniels, claiming that this is political persecution to influence the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
