Xi Jinping says he is ready to have a phone conversation with Zelensky
However, he clarified that "appropriate conditions" must be in place for this

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said he is ready to have a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the same time, the Chinese leader noted that "appropriate conditions" must be in place for this.
Source. This was reported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to China with French President Emmanuel Macron.
"I have urged President Xi to talk to President Zelensky, I know this from phone calls with President Zelensky, and he has publicly asked for this," she said.
Ursula von der Leyen added that Xi's willingness to hold talks is a "positive element."
Von der Leyen also said that during the talks with the Chinese leader, she raised the issue of the war in Ukraine. The head of the European Commission confirmed that she supports the Ukrainian "peace plan" and Beijing's statements about the inadmissibility of nuclear threats to Russia.
"We also expect that China will not directly or indirectly provide any military equipment to Russia, as we all know that arming the aggressor is contrary to international law and will significantly damage our relations," she said.
Earlier, the media reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping is allegedly planning to talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time since the full-scale war. However, the Chinese side has not yet confirmed its readiness for a telephone conversation.
At the end of March, Volodymyr Zelensky said that he had officially asked Beijing for cooperation on Ukraine's 10-point peace plan. He also asked for a summit meeting.
Background. As a reminder, China's ambassador to the EU said in an interview with the NYT that China's support for Russia is not unlimited, and that it is only rhetoric.
