Microsoft launches Europe's largest "cloud region" - data center in Poland

During the 15th European Economic Congress in Katowice, Microsoft announced that it has launched the first so-called cloud computing region in Central and Eastern Europe in Poland.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who noted that for the first time in history, Poland has a chance to become part of the global process of digital transformation and benefit from it. In his speech, he emphasized that this investment will accelerate the technological transformation in Poland:

"More and more different services are going in this direction. In this regard, we want to be at the forefront, or at least among those who are developing cloud technologies around the world."

During the Congress, the Polish Prime Minister announced another initiative:

"It is also important for us that central institutions place part of their activities in other centers. And here, in Katowice, in Silesia, there will be an IT center – part of data processing, part of database creation – of the Polish Financial Supervision Commission, a powerful financial institution that controls the financial market," Morawiecki said.

The head of the Polish government added that Poland has many IT specialists, and the war in Ukraine has made them realize how important cybersecurity is.

Minister of Digitalization Janusz Cieszynski said that this is a great opportunity for Polish business:

"A €700 million loan program will be launched for all companies interested in cloud transformation. In times of expensive money, the crisis caused by the Russian war in Ukraine, we will offer one of the cheapest tools on the market for those who want to transform their companies towards cloud technologies."

The company announced in a press release that "Microsoft's cloud region consists of three independent physical locations near Warsaw, each consisting of one or more data centers and providing the highest standards of security, privacy and shared storage in the country."

Background. As a reminder, the UK has blocked Microsoft's deal to acquire Activision Blizzard for $69 billion.
