The share of Ukrainian films in the national box office has reached 27%
The total box office was UAH 800 million, with the box office of Ukrainian films at UAH 215 million
The share of Ukrainian films in the domestic box office has reached 27% according to the results of the first five months of 2023.
This was stated by Victoria Yarmoshchuk, CEO of FILM.UA Group, in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
The total box office amounted to UAH 800.236 million, the box office of Ukrainian films – UAH 215.897 million.
According to Yarmoshchuk, in 2020 the share of Ukrainian films was 6.4%.
"Right now there's slightly more choice of foreign films, but blockbusters still come to Ukraine. Therefore, such a significant jump to 27% is not a coincidence, but a trend that people are consciously choosing their own cinema," the head of FILM.UA noted.
Yarmoshchuk also pointed out that Netflix had been purchasing Ukrainian content much more frequently. Previously, these were only feature films, but from this year Ukrainian series are already available on Netflix.
In most cases, Netflix buys Ukrainian films only for Ukraine, and in rare cases – for the entire Eastern Europe region.
"For example, Crazy Wedding 3. It's a Ukrainian comedy, absolutely local, but it was bought for the countries of Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. And in Poland, by the way, it had good results, as far as I know. Another one example is the saga There Will Be People, which is available for viewing in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, and Slovakia," Yarmoshchuk said.
According to the head of FILM.UA, the company is now feeling a deficit since everything that was suitable for Netflix is already there and there is a need to produce new content.
