According to the investigation, he passed on to russia information about the positions of the Ukrainian military in the Mykolaiv region, personal data of military and rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, as well as passwords for passing checkpoints and information about the situation in the region.
Herman was detained in April 2022. The indictment stated that he passed the information to a blogger from russia, who then passed it on to russian special services. Herman himself denied the charges.
The court hearing was attended by relatives of Ukrainian soldiers who died as a result of a russian missile strike on the barracks in Mykolaiv on March 18, 2022.
During the trial, they held photographs of the victims, and after the verdict was announced on Wednesday, they threw raw eggs at the glass behind the accused.
The panel of judges of the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa noted that, in addition to life imprisonment, Hennadiy Herman's property would be confiscated in favor of the state.
"If Ukrainian legislation provided for execution, we would be happy to see him shot. Unfortunately, Ukrainian legislation in wartime provides only for life imprisonment for treason of this level. Therefore, we are satisfied with this verdict, because we have no other punishment provided for by law," said Oksana Rutska, the mother of the deceased soldier.
The sentence of life imprisonment for the former head of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office, Hennadiy Herman, was greeted by applause and shouts of "Glory to Ukraine".
