Sixth billionaire to give up Russian citizenship
Earlier, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand imposed sanctions on Makarov
Businessman Igor Makarov has renounced his Russian citizenship. He is at least the sixth billionaire to renounce Russian citizenship since Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Makarov now has only a Cypriot passport, which he received in exchange for investments in 2008-2012. In recent years, the businessman has been living in three countries – Cyprus, the United States and northern Italy.
According to Forbes, the billionaire is worth $2.2 billion. The company Itera, which he founded in the 1990s, resold Turkmen gas. In 2013, Makarov sold his stake in the company to Rosneft for $2.9 billion, receiving $1.8 billion of the proceeds. He further increased his wealth by investing in Western markets.
After the war in Ukraine broke out, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand imposed sanctions on the businessman.
Makarov is the sixth billionaire to give up his Russian passport since the start of the full-scale invasion.
He was joined by Timur Turlov, founder of Freedom Finance, Yuri Milner, founder of DST Global and former co-owner of Mail.Ru Group, Nikolai Storonsky, founder of Revolut, Ruben Vardanyan, founder of Troika Dialog, and Oleg Tinkov, founder of Tinkoff Bank.
"My family and I left Russia for good in 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea. And this summer we officially completed the process of renouncing our Russian citizenship," Milner wrote.
"I have decided to renounce my Russian citizenship. I cannot and do not want to be associated with a fascist country that started a war with a peaceful neighbor," Tinkov wrote.
Background. As reported, Storonsky's bank Revolut began blocking Russians' transactions in Europe. This bank is one of the key banks for Russians traveling to Europe.
