The G7 has approved a declaration providing security guarantees for Ukraine

The G7 has passed a joint declaration of support, with security guarantees for Ukraine.

This was announced by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President.

The declaration itself is a framework general document. The next step is the signing of a system of bilateral security agreements between Ukraine and individual guaranteeing countries, united under a multilateral framework of cooperation.

The key point of the Declaration is a confirmation that Ukraine's security is a component of the security of the Euro-Atlantic region. This point is underscored by the mention of Ukraine's future membership in NATO.

What do the security guarantees entail?

  • Supply of weapons, support in the development of the defence industry, training, cooperation in the field of intelligence and cyber security;
  • Assistance in enhancing the stability of Ukraine's economy and energy sector;
  • Immediate consultations to provide Ukraine with everything necessary for defence as soon as possible in the event of new aggression;
  • Further strengthening of sanctions pressure, freezing of assets;
  • Creation of mechanisms for the recovery of reparations and the legal prosecution of those guilty of crimes against Ukraine and Ukrainians in accordance with the norms of international law.

One of the points of the guarantees is further support for Ukraine's democratic development.

This document is open and allows other countries, not just those in the G7, to join the security guarantees.

"It is important that by the time of the NATO summit in Washington in 2024, we have won the war and signed security guarantees for our state. They will be in effect until we join NATO," notes Yermak.

What assistance have Ukraine's partners promised?

  • The United Kingdom has confirmed the provision of a $65 million aid package to Ukraine. It will include more than 70 combat vehicles and logistics vehicles, thousands of shells for Challenger 2 tanks, and resources for equipment repair and the creation of a military rehabilitation centre;
  • Norway will provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with 1000 Black Hornet reconnaissance drones and two NASAMS systems;
  • Japan will provide Ukraine with a drone detection system;
  • Australia will provide Ukraine with 30 Bushmaster armoured personnel carriers;
  • Germany will provide Ukraine with additional Patriot air defence systems and missiles for them.

In addition, on the sidelines of the summit, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky discussed with European Council President Charles Michel the possibility of opening negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union at the end of this year.
