A Su-30 fighter jet crashed in the Kaliningrad region during a training flight. The crew of two people were killed, the press service of the Western Military District reported, cited by Interfax.
According to preliminary information, the crash was caused by a technical malfunction. The incident occurred in a deserted area, the plane was flying without ammunition.
The Su-30 is a modernized version of the Su-27 fighter jet. It is distinguished by a more powerful fire control system and radar station than its predecessor.
The Su-30 that crashed in the Kaliningrad region became the eighth combat aircraft to crash in russia since the beginning of 2023.
In early February, a Su-25 attack aircraft crashed in the Belgorod region after completing a combat mission. The pilot was killed.
In April, a MiG-31 fighter jet crashed in the Murmansk region, but the pilots managed to eject. In May, a russian Air Force aviation group, including Mi-8 helicopters, a Su-34 fighter-bomber, and a Su-35 fighter jet, crashed in the Bryansk region. Nine people were killed in the crash.
During the Wagner PMC mutiny on June 24, an Il-22M of the russian Aerospace Forces was shot down in the Voronezh region. All 10 crew members were killed. In July, a MiG-31 fighter jet crashed in the Kamchatka Territory, and a Su-25 attack aircraft crashed into the Sea of Azov near the city of Yeysk.
