Latvia's Defense Ministry proposes to mine the border with Belarus

The Latvian Ministry of Defense proposes to reinforce the eastern border with anti-tank mines, tank teeth, reinforced concrete structures and other obstacles.

This was announced by Defense Minister Ināra Mūrniece, who presented an updated concept of state defense, Delfi reports.

Murniece emphasized the need to strengthen the border from both a military and technical point of view. The authorities plan to survey the area to determine the most effective measures to restrict traffic in different parts of the border. A working group has been set up to coordinate the efforts, which will include experts from the Ministries of Interior and Defense.

"The Ministry of Internal Affairs is responsible for building the fence, installing sensors and cables, and this should be done as soon as possible. But the border must also be equipped from a military point of view, because we see how quickly the situation in Belarus is developing," the minister emphasized.

Tensions between Belarus and the western countries bordering it have increased since the arrival of the Wagner PMC. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia demanded that Belarus expel the mercenaries. In case of "critical incidents," these countries threatened to close the borders completely.
