Another U.S. official also confirmed that such a proposal is being prepared and will likely be included in a future military aid package for Ukraine.
Depending on the modification, these missiles, which are launched using the HIMARS and M270 platforms, can fly up to 300 km.
The Ukrainian side has repeatedly asked the United States to supply these long-range missiles. The Americans, however, feared that this would lead to an escalation of the conflict, and also referred to the fact that the stocks of these missiles in warehouses are relatively small. However, according to ABC News sources, it later turned out that the ATACMS stockpile was larger than initial estimates showed.
Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, said in July 2022 that the transfer of such long-range missiles to Ukraine could lead to the outbreak of World War III, but a year later he said that the decision to send ATACMS would be made personally by Joe Biden.
In May, it became known that the UK had supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which have a range of 250 km. Since then, they have been used to strike at Russian Armed Forces facilities in the occupied territories.
