The Republican Party in the U.S. House of Representatives elected Minnesota Rep. Thomas Emmer as its candidate for speaker of the House in the fifth round of secret balloting on Tuesday morning, CNN reports.

According to the TV channel, Emmer was supported by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, while Emmer voted in 2020 to approve the results of the last election, in which Donald Trump lost the presidency, which may lead to resistance from some members of the faction.

In particular, Republican Party representative Steve Womack said between rounds of voting that there was "significant opposition to Emmer in the party." Another party representative, Brandon Williams, said that 26 members voted against Emmer.

Earlier, Emmer, who has been a member of Congress since 2014 and is a member of the Financial Services Committee, announced that he wanted to become speaker in order to achieve "historic change."

According to the website of the Republicans for Ukraine organization, Emmer voted for all congressional initiatives to support Ukraine and against its cuts and made many pro-Ukrainian statements.

In early October, Republican Kevin McCarthy resigned as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Republican Patrick McHenry was appointed as interim Speaker.

Until the House of Representatives elects a new speaker, it cannot negotiate the budget and pass laws.

It was also reported that Republican Jordan, an opponent of aid to Ukraine, was defeated for the third time in the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
