Gennadiy Chastyakov, an assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny, was killed in Kyiv region as a result of an explosive device.
This was reported by Zaluzhny in his telegram channel.
"Today, under tragic circumstances, my assistant and close friend, Major Gennadiy Chastyakov, died in his family circle on his birthday. An unknown explosive device detonated in one of the gifts," the Commander-in-Chief wrote.
He expressed his condolences to the family – the deceased is survived by his wife and four children.
The causes and circumstances will be established during the pre-trial investigation, Zaluzhnyi noted.
According to law enforcement officials, the tragedy occurred in a residential complex in the village of Chaiky in Kyiv region.
After receiving a report of an explosion, the police immediately arrived at the scene and found that a 39-year-old serviceman was killed by a grenade. His 13-year-old son was seriously injured.
Journalist Andriy Tsaplienko, citing sources in law enforcement, claims that it was a case of careless handling of weapons.
"According to my source, the testimony states the following. Around 17:00, Gennadiy Chastyakov came home from work. He brought with him a bottle of alcohol and three German-made grenades that were given to him at work. He took out one of the grenades and started showing me how to handle it. His son was nearby."
