In 2024, only athletes in individual sports will be able to take part in the Olympics; the Russian and Belarusian national teams will not participate in team competitions.
Athletes who publicly supported the invasion of Ukraine and those who have a valid contract with the armed forces will not be allowed to participate in the Games.
Russian and Belarusian officials will not be invited to the Olympics.
As The Insider previously reported, the Russian Olympic Committee was suspended indefinitely in October 2023 for including Olympic councils from the occupied territories of Ukraine in its membership.
At the same time, in March, the IOC recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes who do not support the war in Ukraine be allowed to compete, but in a neutral status. This did not apply to the 2024 Olympics, which the organization planned to announce later.
In August, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that 35 countries would boycott the Olympics if athletes from Russia and Belarus were allowed to participate.
