Bulgarian parliament overrides presidential veto on arms supplies to Ukraine

The Bulgarian parliament has overridden the president's veto of an aid package to Ukraine that included armored personnel carriers and other military equipment.

This was reported by the Bulgarian media and posted on the parliament's website. 162 deputies voted in favor of overriding the veto, while 55 voted against.

According to press reports, under the agreement, Ukraine was to receive about 100 armored personnel carriers along with weapons and spare parts.

Defense Express wrote that these were most likely Soviet BTR-60 armored personnel carriers that had been in storage for about 40 years.

Representatives of the Bulgarian army and the Ministry of the Interior said that their country no longer needed this outdated armored vehicle.

However, President Rumen Radev said that Bulgaria might need the equipment, particularly for border guards and firefighters, and vetoed the deal to supply it to Kyiv.

President Zelenskyy's team commented that they expected the veto to be overridden, which happened on December 8.

According to BBC sources, the most valuable part of this aid package will be air defense systems rather than armored personnel carriers. Bulgaria has a large stockpile of Soviet-style air defense systems and missiles, which is very important for Ukraine right now.

It is not yet known what kind of air defense equipment may be included in the military aid package for Ukraine.

Background. Earlier, Bulgarian Prime Minister Denkov said that the parliament would override President Radev's veto on the supply of armored vehicles to Ukraine.
