MP from Polish party behind border blockade causes scandal in Sejm by extinguishing Jewish menorah

A loud scandal erupts in Warsaw: Grzegorz Braun, a member of the Polish anti-Ukrainian far-right party Confederation, grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out a Jewish menorah in the Sejm.

This suspended the work of the Sejm, and now Polish President Andrzej Duda may not have time to swear in a new government headed by newly elected Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

If this does not happen, Tusk may not be in time for the critical December 14-15 EU summit between Poland and Ukraine.

The incident occurred in the afternoon during the debate after the speech of the new Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

"I ask that the meeting be adjourned and that MP Brown be removed from the meeting. There is no place for anti-Semitic manifestations on the Polish land where the Holocaust took place. Not under the roof of the Polish parliament!" said MP Witold Zembaczynski. He called Brown an "extremist."

Shortly after the incident, Grzegorz Braun appeared on the rostrum of the Sejm, saying that the lighting of the menorah was a "satanic act."

But Speaker Shimon Holovnya excluded him from the session and adjourned.

The speaker told reporters that Brown would most likely pay a fine for his act. There is no other, greater punishment for an MP for violating the rules of procedure.

Israeli Ambassador to Poland Yaakov Livne has already reacted to the incident.

"Shame on you! A member of the Polish parliament has just done this. A few minutes after we started celebrating Hanukkah there," the ambassador commented.

"This is a disgrace. It is unacceptable. It must not happen again," the new Prime Minister Donald Tusk briefly commented on the incident.

"The Confederation is an anti-European and anti-Ukrainian party behind the blockade of the Ukrainian border. The head of the Lublin branch of the party, entrepreneur Rafał Mekler, is the face of the strikes of Polish carriers.

Grzegorz Braun, one of the leaders of the Confederation, is known for his harsh statements against Ukraine. He called for "stopping the Banderaization of Poland" and also stated that "we will not be taught history by Germans and Jews."

Prior to the full-scale invasion, he expressed regret over the deterioration of Polish-Russian relations, and in January 2022, he was the only member of the Sejm who did not vote for a resolution calling on the EU and NATO to help Ukraine.
