Russian billionaires got richer by $50 billion in a year - Bloomberg

The wealth of the richest Russians grew by $50 billion in 2023, Bloomberg has calculated.

Lukoil founder Vagit Alekperov became the richest by $9.29 billion, his wealth increased to $24.7 billion.

Andrey Melnichenko, co-founder of Eurochem and SUEK, became richer by $5.67 billion (his capital increased to $17.2 billion), and Vladimir Lisin, chairman of the board of directors of NLMK (Novolipetsk Iron and Steel Works – ed.), earned $4.08 billion over the year (his fortune is $23.9 billion).

Alekperov and Melnychenko were subject to personal sanctions by the UK, Australia, and the EU. Both decided to resign from their positions in their companies.

Lisin managed to avoid being included in the sanctions lists.

However, not all Russian oligarchs were able to increase their capital. According to Bloomberg, Acron's shareholder Vyacheslav Kantor lost $0.149 billion, and his fortune dropped to $6.21 billion.

Kantor is on the European, British and Swiss sanctions lists.

The drop in his wealth is due to the fact that the Polish authorities confiscated his stake in Grupa Azoty, Poland's largest fertilizer company.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index traditionally measures the wealth of the world's richest people based on the value of shares in companies owned by businessmen. The ranking includes 500 entrepreneurs, including 25 Russians. A year earlier, the ranking showed that Russian oligarchs lost $94 billion in the first year of the war.
