Lithuania and the European Commission to build shelters near schools in Ukraine

The European Commission and Lithuania will build bomb shelters near schools in several regions of Ukraine that are most often targeted by Russia. As the European Commission's Delegation to Ukraine reported on Thursday, the EC is allocating 15 million euros for this purpose, and Lithuania will add another half million and implement the project.
"Russian aggression is depriving thousands of Ukrainian children of a normal life and education. Our latest initiative shows that the EU is committed to ensuring the safest possible educational environment for all children in Ukraine," the press service of the European Commission's Delegation to Ukraine quoted EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova as saying.
Within the framework of this project, bomb shelters at schools will be built in Chernihiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Odesa regions – at least five shelters in each.
The Delegation of the European Commission reminds that as a result of the war unleashed by Russia, every seventh school in Ukraine has been destroyed or damaged, and about 1.6 million school-age children and 200,000 preschoolers do not attend educational institutions.
Background. As a reminder, a smart shelter was opened in Kyiv on the basis of the KPI library. Smartshelter is a social project with no business component. The total investment in the project amounted to $415,000.
