Canadian Conservatives propose to transfer thousands of CRV7 missiles to Ukraine

At a parliamentary meeting on Friday, 2 February, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre, proposed to transfer CRV7 unguided air-to-air missiles to Ukraine, which the country's government was going to dispose of.

Source. This was reported by the BBC.

"Instead of forcing Canadians to pay millions of dollars to write off these weapons, the Conservatives are calling on the [Justin] Trudeau government to give these weapons to Ukraine, which can use them to defend its sovereignty," Pierre Poilievre said.

The spokesperson for the Canadian Defence Minister confirmed that the Canadian government is considering the possibility of transferring missiles to Kyiv.

However, according to him, in order to talk about the transfer of such weapons, it is necessary to make sure that Kyiv really needs them.

In addition, before being sent to Ukraine, the weapons must be inspected to ensure the safety of their transportation, the defence official said.

The CRV7 is a 70 mm calibre Canadian-designed air-to-air missile. Canada has been producing such missiles since the early 1980s. They were decommissioned in the early 2000s.

The Ministry of Defence of Canada currently has more than 83,000 of these missiles in its inventory. However, not all of them are equipped with warheads.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Canada has provided Ukraine with military, humanitarian and financial assistance worth more than $7 billion.

Background. Earlier, it was reported that Canada would provide Ukraine with 10 inflatable vessels and join the training of Ukrainians on F-16s.
