Trump urges US Congressional Republicans to reject Ukraine aid bill

Former US President Donald Trump has called on Republicans in Congress to vote against a bill to provide multibillion-dollar funding to strengthen control of the US southern border and help allies, including Ukraine.

Trump did not mention Ukraine at all, but rather focused on the border and immigration.

"Don't be stupid! We need a separate bill on border and immigration. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape, or form," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on Monday.

Trump is set to run for the Republican presidential nomination again later this year. Passage of the Border and Allied Assistance Act would be an important political victory for President Joe Biden, Trump's likely presidential rival.

On Sunday, members of the US Senate from both parties announced that they had agreed on a compromise version of the bill. In the new version, Democrats made many major concessions to Republicans on immigration restrictions, but Trump apparently considers them insufficient.

"This bill is a wonderful gift to the Democrats and a death wish to the Republican Party. It forgives the Democrats for everything they've done on immigration and the border, and it puts it squarely on the Republicans' shoulders," Trump said.

As AFP reminds us, the bill provides for $118.3 billion in appropriations, and more than half of this amount – $60 billion – is earmarked for Ukraine.

$20 billion is to be spent on the border, $14 billion on Israel, $10 billion on humanitarian aid, and $5 billion on assistance to allies in Southeast Asia, including Taiwan.
