Politico: New sanctions package could include restrictions on Russian diplomats travelling in Europe

One of the proposals for the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia is to restrict the travel of Russian diplomats in the Schengen area. It is proposed to grant travel permits only in the country where they are accredited.

Source. This was reported by Politico with reference to one of the EU diplomats.

This proposal is a long-standing request of the Czech Republic, the publication notes.

However, it is not easy to do. According to Politico, most travel within the Schengen area is often unmonitored.

The 13th package of EU sanctions against Moscow is due to be presented on the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Politico calls it rather symbolic and adds that its content will be limited mainly to adding to the lists of sanctions and lists of goods banned from export to Russia.

Reuters also reported this earlier.

Despite calls from some EU countries to ban more Russian exports, such as aluminium, the European Commission will propose a package of measures that it hopes will trigger minimal debate among member states so that it can be adopted quickly, Reuters writes. To adopt new sanctions, member states must vote unanimously.

According to one diplomat, the 13th sanctions package may expand the list of Russian companies to which EU firms cannot sell dual-use goods. The Reuters sources added that after the adoption of the 13th package of sanctions, the European Commission will quickly propose a 14th package of measures, which may include new import bans.

As reported, the former Putin's "governor" of Sevastopol was arrested in the UK for violating sanctions.
