Russian military, who held over 360 Ukrainians in basement for a month, convicted in absentia in Ukraine
10 civilians died in the basement of Yahidne village due to inhumane conditions and lack of medical care

A district court in Chernihiv Oblast has sentenced 15 Russian servicemen in absentia to 12 years in prison in a case of violations of the laws and customs of war committed by a group of individuals. The court ruled that the defendants forcibly detained 368 residents of the village of Yahidne in Chernihiv region for 28 days in a school basement in the spring of 2022.
According to a statement by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, in early March 2022, Russian troops in the occupied village of Yahidne, Chernihiv district, deprived 368 people, including 69 minors, of their liberty and forcibly held them in the basement of a local school as human shields.
"Local residents were used to cover the command post from possible offensive actions by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Due to inhumane conditions of detention and failure to provide necessary medical care, 10 civilians died in the 'basement of death'," the ministry said in a statement.
Yahidne is located near Chernihiv and near the border with Belarus. The village has been under the control of the Russian army for almost a month. Villages like Yahidne were occupied by the Russian military to surround Chernihiv. They never managed to enter the city itself.
Background. As a reminder, the president visited Chernihiv region to mark the anniversary of the liberation of these territories from Russian occupation and wished Putin to spend the rest of his life in a dark basement with a bucket.
