Ramstein Coalition to provide $88bn worth of weapons to Ukraine over 2 years - Austin
Coalition continues to work in two directions: short-term support and long-term defence planning
The countries participating in the Contact Group for the Defence of Ukraine have raised more than $88 billion in military assistance over almost two years, and the coalition is currently working in two areas: meeting the short-term needs of Ukrainian forces and long-term support.
"For almost two years of this contact group's work, Ukraine has received more than $88 billion in security assistance commitments," Austin said at a briefing after the 20th meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defence in the Ramstein format in Germany, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
He noted that 15 allies have allocated more funds to Ukraine than the United States in terms of their GDP.
The Pentagon chief noted that the coalition is currently working in two areas to help Ukraine.
"Firstly, we are working together to provide short-term support to the Ukrainian forces. And second, we are working diligently with Ukraine's leaders to plan for its long-term defence and deterrence. This long-term support is based on coalitions of opportunity, and they are already in place," the Defence Minister said.
"Our goal is to help Ukraine create a capable force for the long term. The coalitions of opportunity will allow friends of Ukraine to coordinate our support over many years, and to create a consistent, responsive and sustainable approach to Ukraine's long-term security," Austin added.
He also noted that "Ukraine's survival is at stake today" and "there is not a single day to lose".
