Politico: U.S., allies plan to put Ukraine contact group under NATO auspices
This is how they want to hedge their bets if Trump becomes president of the United States
The United States and other Western countries are considering placing the international coalition that coordinates the supply of weapons to Ukraine under NATO's auspices, the US publication Politico reports. The group is currently led by Washington.
The move is intended to help maintain arms supplies to Kyiv if Donald Trump returns to the White House.
On Wednesday and Thursday, at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, participants are expected to discuss the gradual transition of the organisation, called the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defence, to alliance control, Politico writes, citing four officials (three European and one American) familiar with internal discussions on the topic.
According to one of the officials, the authors of the idea hope to finalise the transition at the NATO leaders' summit in Washington in July.
One European official said that the allies see the move as a way to allow other NATO countries to have more influence over the arms supply process if Trump is re-elected.
The Ukraine Defence Contact Group, also known as the Ramstein format, was established in the first weeks after the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022 by US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin and then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley to coordinate Western support.
More than 50 countries participate in the group, including all NATO nations, most EU states, and allies from Africa and Asia.
