"Apple has detected that you have been the victim of a spyware attack that attempts to remotely compromise an iPhone associated with your Apple ID," the message sent to users reads.
The message does not provide details about the attackers or the names of the countries whose users have been warned.
Earlier, when it came to comparable cyberattacks, Apple indicated that they were "state-sponsored," but now this phrase has disappeared, Reuters notes.
The latest report claims that users could have been victims of a "targeted attack by hired hackers".
According to a Reuters source, Apple may have changed the wording after pressure from the Indian government, which requires Apple not to associate large-scale cyberattacks with the state.
In the autumn of 2023, opposition politicians in India accused the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to hack their mobile phones. This happened after Apple issued a warning about "state-sponsored" hacking attacks.
Background. As a reminder, the US authorities have filed a lawsuit against Apple on charges of monopolising the smartphone market. Apple denied the claims and promised to fight the lawsuit vigorously.
