New York court overturns producer Harvey Weinstein's conviction

The New York Court of Appeals has overturned the conviction of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and remanded the case for a new trial. The judges believed that the presumption of innocence had been violated against him.

The Court of Appeal considered it unfair that during the trial of Weinstein, prosecutors involved as witnesses people whose testimony was not relevant to his case.
In addition, according to the court, Weinstein was subjected to cross-examination, which presented him in an "extremely bad light" before the jury.
Harvey Weinstein is a former film producer and co-founder of Miramax Films. In 2017, dozens of women accused him of sexual harassment and rape, sharing their stories on social media under the hashtag #MeToo.
In 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of rape and other sexual offences.
Weinstein, 72, is serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in New York State.
He is not expected to be released immediately, as he also faces a separate 16-year sentence in California after being convicted last year of raping an actress in a Los Angeles hotel in 2013.
